Scope and Contents

This collection consists of typesripts and some photocopies with holograph notations of Hammer's research primarily relating to "Custer in '76" which he edited for publication. The final draft of this work is included in the collection. This book is a compilation of primary source materials, mostly interviews with surviving participants, relating to the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. These notes are verbatim transcripts of selected materials and were made by Hammer with the assistance of the staff of the BYU Archives from the Walter Mason Camp collections located at the BYU Library and the Lilly Library, Indiana University. Also included is a copy of Hammer's doctoral dissertation, "Dakota Railroads" in two volumes.

Hammer is an economist, a historian, and a professor of economic history at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
