Scope and Contents

Handwritten correspondence, handwritten and printed orders, and a handwritten campaign map. Also included are photocopies of handwritten correspondence apparently taken from a microfilm collection. The bulk of the materials were written in the summer and fall of 1876 during the campaigns against the Dakota and Cheyenne Indians. They document the activitiesand condition of the 5th Cavalry during these campaigns. Some letters also document that unit's activities in campaigning against the Ute Indians of Colorado in 1879. Many of the items are either to or from the 5th's commander, Wesley Merritt (1836-1910).
