Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous papers and letters of John Marshall Guion and other family members, including H. Foster Latham. The family was located in and around the area of Seneca Falls, New York, 1820-1850. The collection includes correspondence between family members, receipts and account books, letters written in French, and other documents written by H. Foster Latham. Also included in the collection is a daguerreotype of seven unidentified people, possibly J. Marshall and Elizabeth Guion’s children.

Biographical History

Reverend John Marshall Guion (1786-1878) was a rector of many parishes and a church.

Reverend John Marshall Guion was born about 1786 in Rye, Westchester County, New York. He graduated from Columbia College in 1826 and the General Theological Seminary in 1829 and later became rector of parishes in Saybrook, Meriden, and New Britain, Connecticut. He officiated on various occasions for the Chaplain of the United States Senate and in 1855 he became rector of Trinity Church in Seneca Falls, New York, where he remained until his death in 1878. J. Marshall Guion married Elizabeth Ives Wheaton on 15 May 1832 in Saybrook, Connecticut, and they had seven children.

Biographical History

Hosea Foster Latham was born 1 June 1838 to Ed Smith and Susan Foster Latham. He was a brother to Susan Imogene Latham, daughter-in-law to John Marshall Guion. He attended Hobart College in Geneva, New York. Foster Latham died 30 July 1882.
