Letter written from William (from Head Quarters of Dowdle Family. Camp No. 1[ ] 2 ½ miles out of Camp Israel) to Mr. William Wooduary[ ] of Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut. May 4, 1849. Not in pencil on jacket of letter says Council Bluffs May 1849. 3 pages, blue paper.

William writes about buying bacon and corn and about hearing some strange preaching. At first, he was a little bit reluctant to go on his journey, but he thr[ew] off all his bad feelings and smother[ed] them whenever they show[ed] themselves. He writes that he is on his way to San Francisco and expects letters from William Wooduary[ ] when he arrives.
