George and Lucy Sword diaries

Scope and Contents

Three volumes of journals, all photocopied. The covers say 5-947: Department of the Interior. U.S. Indian Service. The books are related to the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota, and the Oglala Boarding School. There are lists of English names with corresponding Native American names. There are drawings. There are lists of words, mostly in another language, possibly Oglala or Lakota. Occasionally, the words Captain George Sword or Lucy Sword appear. Financial notes have also been written in the diaries. Volume 1: 1892-1896. Volume 2: 1891-1894. Volume 3: 1889-1892. These materials were preserved by Vincent Thunderbull and Ella Imitates Dog, grandparents of the donor.

Biographical History

George Sword was born about 1846 in Nebraska, a member of the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian tribes. He married Lucy, born about 1866, in 1886 at the Pine Ridge Indian Agency, Shannon, South Dakota.
