Scope and Contents

Contains three oral history interview transcripts created as assignments for a Brigham Young University course of modern Japanese history in 2008. Includes interviews with Russell and Annette Horiuchi. In the interviews, Russell and Annette describe their lives, growing up in Hawaii and Japan, their roles and experiences in World War II, their courtship and marriage, and their conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Biographical History

Russell N. Horiuchi was a professor of geography in Utah.

Russell Nozomi Horiuchi was born January 25, 1923. On August 6, 1947, he married his wife, Annette, in Japan. He later taught geography at Brigham Young University. In 1970, he was called to serve as the first mission president of the Sapporo Japan Mission; he served as the mission president until 1973. From 1988-1991, he served as the Temple President of the Tokyo Japan Temple.

Annette A. Horiuchi was born December 25, 1925 in Japan. During World War II, she lived in Tokyo. After the war ended, she began working for General MacArthur, where she met her husband. They were married on August 6, 1947.

Jul Lamb was a student at Brigham Young University, majoring in Asian Studies.

Thomas Coxson (b. 1984) was a student at Brigham Young University, where he majored in Social Science Teaching. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Fukuoka, Japan.
