Biographical history

William Bowker Preston was born November 24, 1830 in Haleford, Franklin County, Virginia. He lived on his father's farm and when he was 21 years old, he left for California in the gold rush. Upon arriving in San Fransisco, he decided to purchase land and start a farm instead of pursuing gold. His neighbors, the Thatcher family, were Mormons and were the cause of his conversion. He was married to Harriet Thatcher on February 24, 1858 by Brigham Young. In 1859 he and his wife moved to Cache Valley, being one of the first settlers in Logan, UT. He became bishop of Logan in 1859 and later was sent to help European pioneers cross the plains. He served a mission in Great Britain, was the presiding bishop of Cache Valley, a Stake President, and the Presiding Bishop of the Mormon Church. He also married Bertha Marie Anderson in 1871 as a second wife. He died on August 2, 1908.
