Scope and Contents

Carte-de-Visite, mounted on a 6.35 x 10.5 cm. (2.5 x 4.125 in.) matte. This is a portrait of Irene with a chain around her neck. She has long, wavy hair halfway pulled up and streaming down her shoulders. She is wearing a white dress with a dark bow around her neck and a light ribbon around her waist. Appears to be a copy of the tintype, image #289 .

NOTE: This photograph has been previously identified as Edith Irvine, but further investigation has led us to conclude that it is Edith's mother, Irene. Several factors have been considered in coming to the conclusion that the image is not Edith. First, in early acquisition paperwork, the tintype was identified as Irene even though the cart-de-visite was identified as Edith. Second, chronologically, the next photograph in the collection is also the only other portrait in the collection that is albumen and is of Edith and her brother Bob when they were only about four and six years old. All subsequent portraits are printed on the more modern gelatin or collodion photographic paper. Third, even though facial features of the tintype portrait are similar with the rest of Edith's portraits, there are some major differences, the most notable being the size of the forehead from the hairline to the eyebrows. Therefore, the tintype is believed to have been taken around 1879.
