True funny stories / Adrienne van Komen

True funny stories / Adrienne van Komen

Dates: 1999 February 23

Report by Brigham Young University folklore student Adrienne van Komen, who collected information from Kari Hullinger. Twelve humorous legends, circulated via e-mail: A woman finds her daughter eating ants, and gives her ant poison. Boeing employees steal a plane raft, use it on the river, and learn that it has an automatic beacon. A Wal-Mart employee makes an embarrassing page. Young boys profit by advising motorists of a radar trap. A would-be bank robber is foiled by paperwork. A speeding motorist exchanges photographs with the police department. Police recover a stolen car by calling the car phone and offering to buy it. A drug possession defendant ruins his illegal-search claim when he hands a packet of cocaine to the judge (who needs a recess to stop laughing). An armed-robbery defendant makes a remark to a witness that ruins his defense, despite a pathetic attempt to salvage it. A man gets a demo of police officers' computer equipment which reveals he is wanted and gets him arrested. A robber demands cash and a bottle of scotch, and shows ID to prove he is over twenty-one. A robber shouts "Nobody move," and shoots his partner when he does.
