Scope and Contents

Collection contains personal and professional papers in addition to other memorabilia from the Bushman family encompassing the years of 1946 to 2012. This includes correspondence, diaries, transcripts, manuscripts, research files, photographs, and printed ephemera. Among the papers are research materials for a project on Mormons in Elkton, Maryland from 1984 to 1985, which includes ward records, journals of local Church members, and interview transcripts. Also includes documentation related to the dedication of the Manhattan New York Temple. Materials are dated 1946-2012.

Biographical History

Richard L. Bushman (1931- ) is an American historian and college professor.

Richard Lyman Bushman was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 20, 1931, the son of a department store executive and was reared in Portland, Oregon. Bushman received his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University, where he studied with distinguished early American historian Bernard Bailyn. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission to the American Northeast and Canadian Maritime Provinces. Bushman taught at Harvard, Brigham Young University, Boston University, and the University of Delaware before joining the history faculty at Columbia. During the 2007-08 academic year, Bushman served as Howard W. Hunter Visiting Professor in Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University and held a Huntington Library fellowship. Bushman married fellow historian Claudia Lauper Bushman on August 19, 1955; and they are the parents of four sons (Richard, Karl, Serge, and Ben) and two daughters (Clarissa and Margaret).

Biographical History

Claudia L. Bushman (1934- ) is an American historian and college professor.

Claudia Marian Lauper Bushman was born June 11, 1934 in Alameda, California. She studied at Wellesley College and Brigham Young University, and received her Ph.D. in New England and American Studies from Boston University. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Claudia Bushman was recognized as mother of the year for the state of New York in 2000. Bushman is a professor of American Studies at Columbia University, and specializes in the history of the Latter-day Saints. In the summer of 2003 she was the director of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Church History's Summer Scholars program, and for the 2007-2008 academic year was an adjunct professor at Claremont Graduate University. Bushman has been heavily involved in cultural activities and public relations in New York City. She was the producer of the youth celebration that coincided with the dedication of the Manhattan New York Temple.

Clarissa Bushman (1956- ) was a Mormon banker and teacher in New York.

Clarissa Bushman was born on October 3, 1956, to parents Richard L.and Claudia L. Bushman. She attended Brigham Young University, Harvard University, and Colombia University. She worked as a banker for various major banks including J.P. Morgan and Lehman Brothers and was involved in the dance industry as a volunteer for the Tri-State Center for the Arts in Pine Plains, New York between 1991 and 1995. She married Charles K. Ortel on January 10, 1982 and together they had two children.

In 2003, she left her position as Vice President of International Capital Markets for Lehman Brothers to go back to university to get her credentials to be a high school economics teacher. After she completed this program, she taught as an economics teacher for Stuyvesant High School until 2013. In 2013, after discovering she had been diagnosed with follicular thyroid cancer, she retired from teaching.
