John McNeil Winter Quarters explosion statement

Correspondence between W. G. Sharp and John McNeil. John McNeil gives a summary of the Winter Quarters Explosion of 1900 in which 199 workers died. He discusses the actions being taken to repair the mines, assist with the funerals for the workers, and prevent future accidents. He says the event could not have been foreseen and was nobody’s fault. 9 photocopied pages with a map. There is also some information in “Notes and Recommendations on the Explosion.” 5 pages photocopied.

Biographical History

John McNeil was born 2 March 1853 in Coatdyke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He emigrated to America in 1876 with his family and attended school, graduating as a mining engineer. He became the first state inspector of coal mines in Colorado and later set up his own business, becoming a consulting engineer in Denver, Colorado.
