Biographical History

Melvin Joseph Ballard (1873-1939) was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Melvin Joseph Ballard was born on February 9, 1873 in Logan, Utah Territory, to Henry Ballard and Margaret McNeal. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated in 1884. In June 1896, he married Martha A. Jones and only a month later left on a mission to the larger cities of the eastern United States. He was transferred to the Northern States Mission and returned to Utah in December of 1898. In 1899, along with Joseph E. Cardon, he organized the Logan Knitting Factory. He served as the Mission president of the Northwestern States Mission. Ballard was ordained an apostle and became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on January 7, 1919. He died of leukemia in 1939.
