Content Description

Contains a letter written by Milton P. Skinner to Ms. Payne Bigelow of Syracuse, New York. He is writing from Yellowstone Park in Wyoming and telling her of his recent trip to the mountains. He tells her of the animals he has seen, the beautiful weather, and his love of the park. He also is commenting on Ms. Bigelow's recent trip to the west. Letter is dated July 20, 1925.

Biographical / Historical

Milton P. Skinner (1879-1963) was a Yellowstone Park Naturalist and author.

Milton P. Skinner was born on December 14, 1879 in Brooklyn, New York to parents Peter and Mary C. Skinner. In 1895, Skinner went to Yellowstone Park where he worked as a walking-tour guide. In 1913 while working for the park engineers, Skinner suggested they focus more on way to educate visitors. His suggestion had a large impact on the goals of the park. In the 1920's he became the first park naturalists and he served in that position until 1922. Following this promotion he wrote a series of influental books and articles about the parks wildlife and other natural attractions. In 1930 he moved to Long Beach, California.

Skinner died on December 15, 1963 in Los Angeles, California.

The letter was found in the book "Bears in the Yellowstone." It was donated to the library by an unknown donor. The letter was discovered in the 20th century workroom in 2014.
