Biographical / Historical

Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) was an American photographer.

Gertrude Kasebier was born Gertrude Stanton on 18 May 1852 in Des Moines, Iowa, to John W. Stanton and Muncy Boone Stanton. In 1859, the family moved to Colorado. They moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1864 after the sudden death of John Stanton. Gertrude lived in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania from 1866 to 1870 where she attended the Bethlehem Female Seminary. She married Eduard Kasebier in 1874. They had three children: Frederick William, Gertrude Elizabeth, and Hermine Mathilde. The two of them were reportedly unhappy in their marriage, but divorce was considered scandalous so the two remained married but lived separate lives from 1880 onward. Eduard continued to support her financially. At 37, she began to attend art school. In 1889, she moved her family back to Brooklyn to attend the Pratt Institute of Art and Design. While there, she learned about the theories of Friedrich Frobel about the importance of motherhood in child development. This would influence many of her later photographs, which emphasized the bond between mother and child. Eduard Kasebier died in 1910. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Gertrude Kasebier continued to expand her portrait business. She gave up photography in 1929 and died on 12 October 1934 at the home of her daughter, Hermine.
