Journal of crossing the plains in 1850

Journal of crossing the plains in 1850

Dates: 1850

Handwritten account of Keith's overland journey from St. Joseph, Missouri to Weaverville, California, in 1850. Keith paid a "Mr. Platner" to guide him and seventeen others to California. After being swindled and abandoned at Fort Laramie, Keith was furnished with provisions by the fort's commanding officer. The diary describes difficult travelling conditions, lack of feed and clean water for the company's animals, and problems with Indians. Keith also passed through Salt Lake City and gives a brief description.
