Biographical History

William Elsey Connelley (1855-1930) was an author, editor, and historian known for his works on Wild Bill Hickok, Kansas, and Plains Indian tribes. William Elsey Connelley was born in 1855 to Constatine and Rebecca J. Connelley. He worked as an author and editor in Kansas.

William Elsey Connelley was born in Johnson County, Kentucky. In 1890 after working a number of odd jobs Connelley began his career as an historical writer and researcher. He was instrumental in creating a cohesive narrative on the history of the state of Kansas. As a part of his work he wrote a "five volume history of Kansas" and a novel entitled "Indian Myths", and completed a great deal of research on Wild Bill Hickok.

Because of his extensive knowledge regarding the Wyandotte Tribe, Connelley was given power of attorney over the tribe. Eventually he was able to save sacred native lands.

He died in 1930.
