Short sketch of the life of Sylvanus Cyrus and Catherine Stoker Hulet

Dates: 1940

Phtocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typewritten manuscript. The item is a biography of Sylvanus Cyrus Hulet and Catherine Stoker Hulet by an unnamed author on an unspecified date. "The parents of both Sylvanus and Catherine were early members of the Church. When but a young boy and girl, they too were baptized members of the L.D.S. Church. With their parents they suffered the persecutions of the early saints." Sylvanus met Joseph Smith, the first president of the Mormon Church, when he was a boy. "He was also at the meeting when Brigham Young was chosen to take the place of the Prophet Joseph and witnessed the manifestion [sic] when the mantle of Joseph fell on Brigham Young." Young was the second president of the Mormon Church. "On April 19, 1850 Sylvanus and Catherine were married at Mt. Pisga, Iowa, by Reverend Marsh." Later, the couple migrated to Utah. "During the course of the journey, cholera broke out in the company. Suffering and death occured along the trail and the mourning of some of the saints could be heard over the departure of the loved one many new graves marked the trail of these west bound emigrants." Their first home in Utah was in Springville. "The Indians were bad and could not be trusted. One day while Catherine's husband was away from home, and Indian came into the house and asked for bread. Flour at that time was very scarce among the saints, so she told him she had no bread. At that he stepped up to the cradle, drew his bow and pointed the arrow at the baby. Through the mother's fear and anxiety for her child she gave him the bread they so sorely needed for themselves. After securing the food he desired, the Indian left satisfied." The couple lived in St. George, Utah, from 1861 to 1872. They then moved to Summit, Iron County, Utah. Sylvanus was made bishop of the Summit Ward of the Mormon Church in 1877. Catherine was the "mother of ten children, nine of whom whe raised to maturity." After the death of Catherine in 1882, Sylvanus married Zina Miller. "From this union there were four daughters. On October 7, 1884 he was married to Betsy Dalley. From this marriage there was one daughter." He died in 1901.
