Administrative History
Fort Bridger (est. 1842) was a fur trade outpost and resupply station in Wyoming. The fort was purchased by Brigham Young in 1855, who operated it until 1857.
Fort Bridger was established in 1842 by fur trader Jim Bridger. In 1853 the fort was abandoned by Bridger after a disagreement with Mormon settlers, and in 1855 the fort was purchased by Brigham Young for $8,000. In 1857 the Mormons burned the fort in the face of the advancing United States Army. Following the war, Congress rejected Young's claim to the fort. The fort was later operated by the United States Army.
