Scope and Contents

Collection includes a photo of Penrose's home in Farmington, Utah; handwritten and typed poetry by Charles W. Penrose, generally on spiritual topics (but including a sweet acrostic for his wife Lucetta, with transcription); letters written by Charles to William S. Paine (about Moses Thatcher), Cassie Donahoo, and daughter Lucile; printed pamphlets written by Penrose and others on Gospel topics (basic Church doctrine, the plan of salvation, the Second Coming of Christ, the priesthood and Church leadership, apostasy, the gift of the Holy Ghost, repentance and baptism, revelation, etc.); issues of the Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine (with article about Penrose) and Liahona (with address by Elder Stephen L. Richards and testimony of President Penrose); and newspaper clippings related to Charles W. Penrose. Materials dated 1861 to 1966.

Biographical / Historical

Charles W. Penrose was born February 4, 1832, in London England. In 1861, he emigrated to Utah and settled in Ogden, Utah. He later became an editor of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City and professor of theology at Brigham Young Academy. Penrose became an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1904, serving as second counselor to President Joseph F. Smith in 1911, and second counselor to President Heber J. Grant in 1921. Penrose died May 19, 1925.
