Hammond family biographies and diary

Dates: approximately 1856-1960

This collection consists of typescripts of biographies and histories of members of the Hammond family and their ancestors. The biography of Jasper Melvin Hammond (1882-1958) was written "by his wife and daughters" sometime after his death. Jasper, often called Jesse, was born in Providence, Utah but was raised in Marysville, Idaho. He worked in hotels in Yellowstone Park, for a railroad, and as a farmer. A typescript of the diary of Milton D. Hammond (1831- ) for the years 1856-1858 is also included. At this time Milton was living in Fort Limhi, Idaho. He describes life there and gives details on an engagement with Indians (perhaps Nez Perce) on 25 Feb. 1858. The biography of Jasper Thornton (1832-1911) written by his children is also in the collection. Jasper was born in Canada and later emigrated first to Utah and later to Idaho. He was a carpenter by profession. An incomplete biography of Sarah Elizabeth Dunn Thornton (1836- ) covering the years 1836-1863 "as related by her to her children" is also with the materials. Sarah was an early pioneer to Utah and California. She passed by the site of the "Mountain Meadow's Massacre" shortly after that incident. A history of the Walker family entitled "About our Ancestors" by Frances H. Smith is also in the collection. It tells of the history of the family and includes family genealogies. Short biographies of Joseph Smith Hendricks (1838-1922) and Sariah Fedelia Pew Hendricks (1833-1919?) and a history of Grantsville, Utah given as a radio production in 1937 are also in the collection.
