Biographical / Historical
J. Roman Andrus (1907-1993) was a faculty member of the art department at Brigham Young University from 1940 to 1974.
James Roman Andrus was born in St. George, Utah on July 11, 1907, to Alexander Burto Andrus and Rozilla Brooks Andrus. He had three siblings, two brothers and one sister, and spent his childhood in Southern Utah, where he was able to observe and appreciate Utah's naturally breathtaking landscape. In 1933, he was married to Irva Pratt, with whom he had five children.
Andrus earned his bachelors degree in 1942 and his masters degree in 1943 from Brigham Young University. He went on to study at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and received his doctoral degree at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 1958. He worked as an arts professor at BYU from 1958 to 1972.
An accomplished painter, Andrus was best known for his landscape pieces, though he also painted portraits. Andrus was the recipient of the Utah State Institute of Fine Arts Purchase Prize in 1945 and 1950, and was named professor emeritus at BYU in 1974.
He passed away in the year 1993 at the age of 85, and was buried in Provo, Utah.
